Tucson Theft Crime Defense Attorney
Trial-Tested Advocacy from a Former Prosecutor
Arizona law defines theft not only as the unlawful taking of someone else's property, but it also applies these laws to stealing services from someone else. Theft then is not just snatching something from a store to shoplift or robbing someone at knifepoint (those these are both forms of theft), but fraud or misrepresentation that cheats someone out of compensation for their services would also be charged and sentenced as theft.
At Mulembo Law PLLC, our theft defense lawyer is a former prosecutor turned defense attorney who has experience handling complex fraud cases in federal courts. What Are the Penalties for Theft in Arizona?
A lot depends on the amount of property or services that are said to have been stolen, as well as the absence or presence of certain factors, such whether weapons were involved.
In general, these are some of the potential penalties for a first-time theft conviction:
- Petty theft: If the stolen property is valued at $1,000 or less, the crime is considered a petty theft and is punishable by up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500.
- Felony theft: If a theft crime involved more than $1,000 worth of property or services (a Class 6 felony), then there could be a sentence of up to 5 years and 9 months in prison upon conviction. For theft of $25,000 or more of property or services (a class 2 felony), there could be an up to 35-year prison sentence.
